The first photo is a "before" of our master bedroom. On each side of the large window were drywalled boxes that jutted out, topped with white wooden poles. The reason for one of the boxes (left of the window) is because the kitchen fireplace is on the other side of the wall. I'm assuming the builder put the other one in for decoration. We couldn't remove the left one but we did remove the box to the right of the window, to allow for our dresser and mirror. And we removed both white wooden poles- they were hideous.
When we bought the house, the previous renter painted the master bedroom walls black and grey with a sponge technique. It was very ugly, made the room seem dark and even worse they mudded the walls, giving the walls a strange texture. Our painter skimmed the walls 3 times and still couldn't get a smooth surface, so he used a technique called Suede. The walls really do look like suede, but it's subtle. We chose a soft grey-taupe color that works well with our decor.
Lastly, we removed the ceiling fan (which had green metal vines on it....Kylie called it the Tinkerbell Fan), put up a nickel-brushed ceiling fan, and replaced the carpet.
