Recently the girls have been asking for a pet. At first they wanted a dog, but we quickly told them that dogs were too much work. Months ago we told them that "maybe" we could get a cat after Myrtle Beach. I saw a kitten in the daycare parking lot last Tuesday and would have taken him home, except for the fact that I was running late for work. It turns out that he belonged to the house next to the school; however this just fueled the girls' (and my) desire for a cat.
For the next few days I waffled back and forth about the possibility of getting a cat. I reminded myself about hairballs, litterboxes, fur and did I really want to deal with that again? My coworkers told me no, but I couldn't get the thought out of my mind.
Saturday we were at the local greenhouse buying a hydrangea when we saw a sweet white and orange cat walking around. The employee explained that she lives at the greenhouse. She looked very tiny so I was surprised to hear that she was 6 years old. That was the size we wanted. Our former cats were male and huge. We wanted a smaller cat.
After leaving the greenhouse I stopped by the vet across the street and looked at their bulletin. I saw several signs for free kittens but one said "4 kittens, female, held a lot." I also went to the gas station and saw more free kitten signs. Again I saw the one for females, held a lot. I left messages at three numbers. The "held a lot" lady called me back, she had one kitten left and she was the smallest of the litter. She said her 16 year old had gotten quite attached to her, so she was hoping someone would take her while her daughter was out of the house. She gave me directions to her house and she lived only 5 miles from our house. On the way there my phone rang and it was another kitten lady calling back. She was actually on her way to the SPCA with the kittens and asked if I could come right away. I felt bad saying no, but I was already on my way to look at the held-a-lot kitty.
I finally found the house after several phone calls to the lady (Tanya) and getting lost in a maze of mobile homes and cornfields. La-La was sleeping in a basket in the kitchen. Of course Kylie immediately fell in love and asked if we could keep her. Even Sophie seems interested. I thought about it a few minutes and said yes. We had no litterbox, food, nothing, as we got rid of all of those when Duncan passed away. We went to Krogers and bought $60 worth of stuff. Too late to back out now.
La-La appears to be enjoying her new home. Sophie is terrified of her (we're working on that) but Kylie loves her already.
