"Stuff"

As usual, this past week has been a whirlwind of stuff. Here's some of the things that happened that I recall off the top of my head:

  • Last night Steve was at a Reds game, so after tae kwon do I took the girls to KFC for dinner. We sat in a booth near of table of elderly women. I could feel them looking at us for a long time. Finally one of them approached me and asked, "Are they sisters?" As usual, all I said was yes. I was expecting her to further ask me if they are biological sisters, but she didn't. Instead, she said, "I just knew it!" and ran over to tell her friends. I think my girls look similar some times, and some times they look very different.

  • Last night Kylie and I also watched a documentary dvd on China while Sophie was asleep. I checked this out of the library because they had a portion of the dvd about Yunnan, the province where Kylie was found. In the documentary the host goes to a large open market where the locals are dining. She watches a man empty a bag of live frogs onto a cutting board, and then proceed to cut their heads off and gut them. He did the same thing with a live snake. Kylie freaked out, and I don't blame her. She asked me all kinds of questions about why the Chinese eat cat, dog, frogs and snakes. I tried to explain to her that it is a different culture there. Ever since we watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Beijing, Kylie has stated that she wants to go to China. She now asks me every day about China, the name of the town she is from, the name of the town Sophie is from, and where her friend Angus is from. I showed her a map of China and pointed out where she and Sophie were born. She asked me where Daddy and I were born. I explained to her again that we were born in the U.S. and it's far away from China. Some days she understands, and other days she gets very confused. I know that's normal. I think (hope) I'm doing a decent job of explaining things to her.

  • Klylie and I were discussing school today. I was explaining to her that she is in preschool, and next year she will be in kindergarten at a new school. She asked me what comes after kindergarten, so I was explaining how she'll attend elementary school, then junior school, then high school and then college. She looked up at me and innocently asked, "Mom, when I'm done with college do I still need to be in a car seat?" It was very funny, especially with the innocent look on her face.

  • Kylie's hair is getting so long! She wants to have it long, although almost all of the time it is in a ponytail. She actually prefers it in a ponytail. When we first adopted her, her hair was fine, frizzy, thin and stood straight up. Four years later and it is a lot thicker, very shiny and with beautiful natural highlights. I wish I had her hair.

I just realized all I've done in this post is talk about Kylie. I have lots of new and funny things involving Sophie but I'm bushed. I'll post some more tomorrow.
